On trying to appear far cleverer than I actually am...
A friend from college suggested I submit a paper on Tubewhore to the Literary London conference in July.  It's been ten years since I presented to an academic audience, and felt the creaking weight of those years as I tried to remember how to write an abstract in 300 words without sounding like a total prig...But I can't have done too badly, thanks to some hand-holding from [info]roseyphoenixand [info]midnightxpress telling me I can actually be smart and funny and I've got peering witheringly over my glasses like all good academics absolutely down, as in mid-April I had a very excitable unofficial response from the organiser.

Anyway, the good news is that I had an official email this morning to say the paper has been accepted.  The bad news is that it's going to cost about £200 (conference fees, accomodation, fancy dinner, train fare).  I still feel it's worth doing, although honestly, as much for my ego as any other reason...so I have booked holiday time and now have the perfect reason to knock out the top end of the Metropolitan line.  Anyone got any fabulous ideas for things to do in London in July?

huzzah! I do like to find a reason to go places, things to see places to visit etc, and i think having to go to Uxbridge for a conference counts rather well.

the fee is bastard, buggering expensive! I am certainly going to go for tea somewhere interesting while I'm up though...and the Darling L has offered to do 4th July supper at her place.

not a clue! The whole thing sounds intersting and I noticed that one of my friends is also listed as a speaker and she did her PhD on goth subculture so very keen to hear what she's speaking about.

Bravo,

Kensal Green is holding its open day on the 5th July.
Alternatively, what about hitting Croydonia to see the dinosaurs with a picnic?

Huzzah,

BTW, don't forget there's also the UCL guided tour on 14th June.

Dinosaurs in the Evening sounds like a top idea (as well as some mock-documentary thing), photos at dusk could be quite effective.

going to the park for a picnic supper was a time-honoured way of spending an evening when I lived in CP. The local museum is only open on Sundays, which might be hard as I'll have to catch a train back on Sunday eve, but very keen to see the monsters again.

I won't sing the Cliff Richard song, you don't deserve that. You rock and it's cool that you'll get to present a Tubewhore paper to a conference!

Pity the conference webpage looks like an emo teenager's work rather than an that of an academic...

I wish you lots of success!

Psst-I'll bet a lot of people on tubewhore will help you out if you put a paypal donate button up. I would.

Still up for tea if you make it to the top end of the Northern Line High Barnet branch. Not much else exciting around here though I don't think.

YOu might check whats on in Quantain Rd, http://www.bucksrailcentre.org/
it was a Met station at one stage and they have a big auction/swop meet at teh end of July.

as well as live steam and I think a CO set of underground stock.

They have Metropolitan Railway 0-4-4T E Class No. 1 Operational and a regular on passenger trains, Post Office underground train and a carriage from the New York Subway, and its the perfect place for a picnic. Sometimes trains connect from Aylesbury.

well done btw

J
