A reminder
Next weekend, the 8th & 9th March is the Open Day over at the London Transport Museum in Acton.  All manner of hijinks and transport-related shenangins going on - model trains, model railways, art collections...

More details here: http://www.ltmuseum.co.uk/visiting/86.aspx

I know that at the Sewing Machine Museum people were keen on attending, so possibly catch up with people there. I think there were even threats of a picnic if the weather is kind.  I'm planning on going on the Saturday.  I might even bake muffins...and the following Tuesday is my birthday so if people want to shower me with cards and presents I shall blush modestly while secretly loving the attention.

I've been looking forward to this Open Day since July  because I have become a tragic transport geek, only I'm in impratical shoes...not many hairies wear heels.

Then in the evening the tube-nerdiness continues with:

Were you planning on going on Saturday or Sunday? I ask because I was planning on going to this on Saturday.

I was planning to do the Saturday as have plans for the Sunday...hadn't heard about your event becuase generally out of touch.

Having been through some unpleasant domestic abuse myself I feel I ought to go, even if the cynical part of myself thinks we'll never end male violence; too endemic, and too embedded in our culture to the point of invisibility sometimes.

I heard about it at the take back the night march in November. There hasn't been much buzz about it though. Some women from feminist lives are going to go together.

I'm so torn between this and the trains though... choices choices.

I did the 'Take Back the Night' March the year before and really enjoyed it. I don't if it's apathy or nihilism that makes me wonder if marching an ever changes anything, especially after the anti-war marches recently...

The take back the night march made a difference to me and I hope it did to the women who marched with me. I like to think we made the people who came across us think as well.

Oh I definitely think it's better to try and fail than not try at all for fear of failing - if that makes any sense...

Just the level of acceptance of all manner of violence against women is so deeply-rooted in our culture. It's a bloody minefield to untangle. I've had discussions with male friends and aquaintences on many occasions and it's still astounding the difference in experiences just walking about the world for men and women.

Certainly I chose to look non-standard, and I would be a fool not to expect my appearance to garner general commentary on the street, but even when I looked 'normal' male friends would refuse to believe the sort of comments and actions women have to put up with on a daily basis. It's as though to believe me in the quantity of verbal abuse/scopic violence the average women deals upset their world view too much, so I must be exagerrating or lying. ...and this is before we even get into figures for domestic violence...

Sorry just noticed that you said Saturday in your post! Reading is clearly not my strong point.

Will try so hard to make this! What sort of time were you going to be getting there?

Tube party sounds fantastic...did you ever go to any of the 80s Goth tube parties?

times? times!!! that would smack of organisation! Probably late morning sometime - basically after I've sorted out a manicure and dragged myself across to Acton.

*smacks wrist for being overly ocd!*

Though the method to the madness is that I'll be coming up in the morning and pre-booking tickets makes things cheaper, but having looked a saver return is the cheapest option now anyway, so doesn't really matter!

cool - text me with your expected arrival and so on...

and no, never did any of the 80's Goth tube parties - as still living in Cornwall back then and pretty much unaware of the wider scene...bet they were fun!

Still hoping to be there - like you, will arrive when I have dragged myself across from Kings Cross and maybe collected another trainspotter from Ealing Broadway. I know what you look like. So if you're accosted by a Dawn French lookalike (only with curls) wearing a pink scarf - that's me!

Alas, I've been asked to attend a family do on Saturday afternoon, though hopefully I'll be around in time for the evening's fun and frolics.

With any luck I'll be there for this too, possibly for the party afterwards as well :)
