The State of the Map - January 2008.
Ok, so 185 stations done, of a new grand total of 343, not forgetting the possibility that they'll add more before I've finished...and the map looks like this:

I've put Shoreditch back in, as I am determined to make it there by bus, or just bloody walking if needs be, at some point.  Preferably before the  new station is built.  I realise that I can't pass through the ticket barrier, which is one of the rules of this game, but as there isn't strictly a ticket barrier to pass through anymore I shall do the best I can.

The map above also doesn't include the parts of the London Overground that are on the small free maps you get at stations - namely the spur from New Cross Gate to West Croydon and Crystal Palace. I have now included them on the tally list, and will be collecting them purely as an excuse to go see the dinosaurs at the park and indulge in an afternoon of nostalgia as this is the line I lived on or around for most of my time in London.

...but to return to the Tube proper, the observant may have noticed that little spur of the Northern Line poking out to the far south.  That would be the Morden extension, taking in the seven stations between Clapham South and Morden opened in 1926.  I already have Balham, but six stations remain uncollected.  I intend to deal with that situation this coming weekend.

This will be  voyage into the unknown as I've never ridden the Northern Line further south than Tooting...

I've chosen next weekend though as there's a small museum dedicated to vintage sewing machines at Balham that's only open between 2-5pm the first Saturday of every month.  Meet at Balham tube station in the ticket hall at 2pm and we can all stroll down together...I'll be the one in a bustle...

ohh I'd love to come with you when you do my end of the Northern Line! When next weekend did you think you'll do it? Sat or Sunday? I have to be at the London Alternative Market on Sunday afternoon, but otherwise I've got time!

oh, and there's a big craftstore at Tooting Bec station, they have all sorts of small stuff cheaply...

2pm Sat sounds fine - I thought the vintage museum was at Tooting Bec... next to the craft superstore?

see, I thought that too, but the address is given as 308 Balham High Road which on maps is closer to Balham...

craft store sounds dangerous to the wallet!

is it at the Wimbledon Sewing Machines shop? if yes, then this is definitely closer to Tooting Bec, but I might well be wrong too! I only went once into the Wimbledon Sewing Machine hall (it's a huge hall full of sewing machines, but modern ones)

The craft shop is fantastic, they have millions of stuff cheaply, and the staff is funny too ('Can I help you? Oh I'm back in sec, I'll just go for a wee!' lol)

It's connected to the shop, but not sure if it is located there - I'll give them a call tomorrow and make absolutely certain. Balham is the one station on that bit of the line that I don't need to get, so would rather it be Tooting Bec, or Tooting Broadway.

Hello , I just stumbled upon your LJ while surfing through a steampunk community.
I think your idea is amazing,I wish I could be in your place,I've been fascinated by the subway lines/the underground ever since I can remember and I love reading your entries about your own adventures on the London tube.I haven't read them all yet ( I'm at work , must keep a low profile...) but I will get to it soon.
The point of the comment besides these small statements was to as you if I can add you to my friends list.

T.S

P.S : out of the context here , but have you read a book titled "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman ? I think you would like it because it deals with the issue of a whole fantasy world based all through the London tube.

Yes, I have both read Neverwhere and watched the BBC series - I do love Gaiman but more the Sandman stuff. Mind you I'm building up quite a little library if tube related books since e I began this silliness. Please do add me; that's what the blog is for.

You really haven't missed much TBH. Although the exteriors of Morden and S Wombledon are fairly nice in a 20s sort of way. Same can't be said for the interiors, especially the ticket barrier at S Wimbledon.

West Croydon's the Overground?! I live there, could be usefull. If you do it of a weekend, I might conspire to try to be in, though I'm usually not. Lunch (or dinner on a school-night) at Aachi Masala? It's cheap, cheerfull, shows Bollywood videos and is extremely pink.

am loving the Bollywood idea! If you check the new map West Croydon is listed on the spur from New Cross Gate via Honor Oak Park/Forest Hill - so will do the Horniman Museum for that...

...not sure when that will be yet - possibly March, but not this coming weekend...

But yes, tiz a bit boggling...

I used to live between Colliers Wood and South Wimbledon so I know that bit pretty well. There's more stuff to see at the Morden end though. Including a gorgeous mosque (not sure it's open to visitors) and a little mill. If I'm at a loose end on Saturday would you mind if I joined you? We met at the cemetery open day.

Yes, I remember meeting you. Please do come along - would be lovely to say hello again.

Full plan of the day is to be in Dulwich in the morning for the Age of Enchantment exhibition at the Picture Gallery, then knock out a few tube stations making my way back up to Tooting/Balham - there's seems to be some doubt as to which is closer for the Sewing Machine Museum.

I have National Trust membership, and the Mill at Morden is theirs IIRC - used to be a snuff mill.

they were restored not so long ago so looking a lot better than when I lived there.

...the dinosaurs have been there since the 1850's and was the first theme park ever built. The Royal Geological Society even had a dinner there inside one of the models...

...as ever, rely in wikipedia to tell us more:

I think I'm going to wait till Spring to go visit, and have another picnic there - spent many summer evenings in the park when I lived just down the road

oh and FYI Balham High Road starts at Clapham South tube station, I know this since I used to live there, and goes to Tooting, 330 is nearer Tooting Bec station...

well that does seem to be two votes that this place is closer to Tooting Bec than Balham, which is what I originally thought anyway so I shall post a change of plan to met at TB at 2pm instead...don't need to get Balham anyway, so suits me...

Well the tubing sounds like good fun, alas I'm taking a friend to the Terracotta Warriors that afternoon.

Incidentally, I notice that you still have chunks of the DLR outstanding - want to clear that out one weekend? Off-hand the only locations of note are really around Greenwich, so I reckon you could clear a swathe in one day.

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]tubewhore
2008-01-28 07:20 am UTC (link)
It's certainly a plan to cut a swathe through the DLR one weekend as I've found very little to go see around the stations in my online research - there was a ski slope near one once, but don't think it exists anymore...but yes, Greenwich is a nice place to visit and I know the bits around Lewisham very well. I'm quite looking forward to the Lewisham to Cutty Sark bit but the bits over towards Beckton look a little dull.

...really must see the Terracotta Warriors before that finishes...that, and the Tutenkhamum exhibition as well.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]failing_angel
2008-01-28 11:38 am UTC (link)
Fortunately, the majority of the DLR is barrier-less so it's a very easy hop-on-hop-off journey.

Terracotta - I need to sort out my membership, but I will have Self+Guest if you're interested.
King Tut - I'm less tempted, and since Egypt is relatively close and accessible, I'm more tempted to visit it in situ.

Warriors ("Come out and play-ay!!") is on until 6th April.
However, it's likely to require an early start (ie be at the BM at 9am) to get tickets.
On the plus side, it'll mean that we would get in before the place fills up with the world and his wife.

I've done it again - looking at my diary, I'm booked for Sunday, not Saturday, so if you need a back-up camera on Saturday, just holler.

March could be an "interesting" month for me as we'll be moving house. However, I was planning on booking the week off for shuffling of stuff, so we could make it Monday - discuss closer to the time?

And DLR - I haven't read this blog from the very beginning so don't know if you've done it yet, but if you get to North Woolwich/GeorgeV there's a railway museum but it's only open in term time and other really strange times. I will get there one day when it's open...
