The map.
The map is the law underlying the project; if it's on the map it counts and has to be collected.
I arrive into Paddington a little after half nine on Thursday evening, feeling like a refugee as I'm dragging one of those woven plastic checkered bags that you see the weary gathered at Victoria Coach Station using as the luggage of choice. Mine only contains curtains and a fur throw for
midnightxpress - I'm decluttering, he's nest building in Surbiton and there was a pile of curtains sitting here taking up space that should be made use of. And I'm feeling lost and rootless anyway and I drag the bag, inch by ruddy inch along the full length of the platform as my reservation was in the farthest carriage from the ticket barrier...
...at the tube station, I dutifully pick up the new map to peruse as we drag the curtains to Waterloo for G's train back to a hotel in suburbia. It's changed radically. Clapham Junction is now on the map. Watford bloody Junction is there...and some place called Headstone Lane which appeals at least. All in all the count has gone up from the 274 tube stations proper to a total of 343 stations listed. I sigh with resignation. Still gives me something to do of a weekend...the new map is ugly though; the clarity is gone. I stare at it in annoyance as the 211 bus takes me over Westminster Bridge and through to Victoria and on to L's place. Clapham Junction?
